Mitsubishi Street Racing Cars
Mitsubishi brought to New York a whole bevy of new or newly styled sedans. There was the facelifted Diamante luxury sedan (which is not nearly different enough to warrant a photograph here). The big news was the Lancer - a name familiar to Japanese and Europeans. Mitsubishi uses the small sedan as the basis for their wildly successful rally-racing program, so they brought the race car version. They also brought the Lancer Evolution VII - essentially a street-going race car with 280 horsepower. Mitsubishi says it hasn't decided yet if Americans are ready for the Evo. What we will get is considerably more tame: the standard Lancer. It replaces the under-appreciated Mirage economy car. The Lancer is bigger in every dimension than the car it replaces. All Lancers are powered by a 120-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The three Lancer trim lines will be available in fall of this year, ranging in price from $14, 000-$17, 000.
