Available as a coupe or convertible, the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse has some of the best fuel economy ratings in the class. However, the Eclipse falters with poor rearward visibility.
The base 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS is powered by a 162-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The GT model has a 265-horsepower, 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine. Both models have a standard manual transmission and an available automatic transmission. Test drivers said the GS with either transmission can get you anywhere you need to go. However, most suggested the more powerful Eclipse GT with a manual transmission for more fun performance. The Eclipse GS with a manual transmission gets 20/28 mpg city/highway, which is high for the class. While some reviewers said that the 2009 Eclipse handles well for a front-wheel drive sports car, one critic noted that the convertible’s larger turning circle made the Eclipse less nimble than he would like.
Most reviewers liked the interior design of the Eclipse, but some reported that the rearward visibility is poor. They found the front seats comfortable, but noted that the back seat only has enough space for children. The Eclipse hatchback has more cargo space than most cars in the class, with 15.7 cubic feet of space. The Mitsubishi Eclipse comes standard with keyless entry, cruise control, full power accessories and a six-speaker audio system with a CD player. Available equipment includes a sunroof, temperature display, a premium audio system with satellite radio, a six-disc CD changer, heated front seats and automatic climate control.
