Two of every three deaths in U.S. auto racing over the past three years occurred at short tracks, which have been slow to embrace changes that are saving lives in racing’s major leagues. The most recent tragedy happened last weekend in New York when auto racing star Tony Stewart hit and killed 20-year-old sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr., who was standing on the track and pointing toward Stewart’s car coming toward him while the race was under caution. The two had just tangled in a turn seconds earlier, sending Ward’s car into a wall. Ward became one of more than 520 people across America who have died in auto racing in the past 25 years, an Observer study shows. His death prompted NASCAR to adopt a new rule Friday prohibiting its drivers from leaving their cars and walking onto the track to confront other drivers after accidents. That’s the way most safety changes happen in auto racing, spurred by tragedy. NASCAR has not had a death at any of its top levels since investing millions of dollars in safety after Dale Earnardt’s death on national television at the Daytona 500 in 2001. The effort produced mandatory head-and-neck restraints, crash-absorbing walls at NASCAR’s top series tracks, and a new, safer car. Most short-track owners have not mandated head-and-neck restraints or other safety features to cars. Much like NASCAR’s reaction to Earnhardt’s death, the smaller venues have responded to individual tragedies. But unlike NASCAR, short tracks haven’t made sweeping safety changes. “Short track racing is usually mayhem, hopefully controlled, ” said H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, former longtime president of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “That’s what people want. It’s like ice hockey with cars.” Of at least 523 racing deaths since 1990, 53 percent have been at short tracks. That has climbed in the past three years to about 70 percent. Short tracks are also where most U.S. racing takes place. Twenty-two percent of the deaths in the past 25 years were at drag strips. The number of racing deaths annually appears to have dropped in recent years from an average of more than 20 to about 15 over the past five full years. There were at least 40 deaths in 2001 alone when the Observer began its study. No one in racing keeps track of how many people die, so it’s possible that the Observer’s count doesn’t include all fatalities. Saturday night short-track racing goes back more than 50 years to the sport’s roots in the South. Unlike the sprawling superspeedways where NASCAR’s top drivers now compete, short track races typically feature up to 24 drivers who jostle for position on oval tracks less than a half-mile around. Cars can travel at treacherous speeds of up to 130 mph. Fans often stand just feet away. Drivers at short tracks generally prefer to spend money on tires and parts to make their cars go faster, rather than safety equipment that could keep them alive. Randy LaJoie, a former NASCAR driver whose company builds seats for drivers, runs a nonprofit called the Safer Racer Tour – a project that has sent him to more than 100 tracks, offering safety tips. It’s a message, he says, that some drivers don’t want to hear. “I’ve almost gotten into fights telling people they’re not safe, ” LaJoie said. Safety mandates For years, when someone died in racing it was often called a freak accident – an unusual set of circumstances that no one could have foreseen. But a 2001 Observer investigation, “Death at the Track, ” revealed dangerous patterns from the top levels of racing on down. Detecting those patterns, the report concluded, could save lives. One of the major breakthroughs since Earnhardt’s death, caused by injuries to his head after his car slammed into a wall, has been the increased use of the head and neck restraints by drivers. They’re designed to stop the racer’s head from whipping forward in a crash. That reduces the likelihood of head and neck injuries that can kill drivers. Since Earnhardt’s death, many top divisions including NASCAR have mandated the restraints. But at most short tracks, restraints are still only a recommendation. Dr. Steve Olvey, a leading motorsports safety expert and an associate professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami, said that he had expected smaller tracks to learn from safety advances. “Unfortunately, for whatever reason, these lower series have not adopted these things that have been shown to be beneficial in the major series, ” Olvey said. Chuck Davies, CEO of Simpson Performance Products, the Mooresville company that manufactures the HANS device, estimates that only a third of race car drivers use such head and neck restraints.

Asphalt race tracks for remote control (RC) cars have closed in Compton, Huntington Beach, Riverside, San Diego, and Pomona, and now, Southern California is dominated by dirt tracks for off-road RC cars. But there is one place where you can still burn a little rubber on asphalt. “There was a group of about 6 fathers, mine included. They were looking to keep their sons and kids out of trouble, and give us a positive thing to do, ” says Glenn Williams, president of the GLARCRC. “A few dads had experience with radio control planes. So they got together and said, ‘let’s buy our sons radio control cars for Christmas’ … We had basic remote control cars that nowadays would be considered prehistoric. We thought that 35mph was really doing well.” The Greater Los Angeles Remote Control Racing Club meets 22 times a year at the Harbor Gateway Transit Center parking lot. Jesus Ambrosio For the past 9 years, GLARCRC has called the parking lot at Harbor Gateway Transit Center in Gardena its home. The total length of this parking lot track is 1, 077 feet. Some of these cars are curving that in 17 seconds, maneuvering through 12 turns. Every few minutes the cars make a pit stop. The pit crew checks the suspension and always have a bottle of fuel handy. Just like a real car, it takes fuel to make horsepower – and some of these badboys are burning up to 4 ounces of oil in less than 4 minutes. The club, which has 60 members, meets up 22 weekends a year, and most of the races are friendly, but the club hosts the Fifth Scale World Challenge – a 4-day competition with over 230 racers. During some of these club meets, some of the racers tinker with their remote control cars under canopies, but others 8 feet in the air, standing on the roof of a trailer, guiding their shoebox-sized racecars around the rectangular track. Victor Garcia's fifth scale remote control care without its skin. Jesus Ambrosio Victor Garcia from Long Beach has been racing with the club for 20 years. “[The] mind relays the remote control car to the real car somehow, ” Victor says. “You get in the driver stance, even though you aren’t driving the car. You mind goes into a crazy mood where you feel like you are literally controlling the car in the car. It hard to explain.” The yellow track layout has plenty of black skid marks, and crashes happen a lot. Some of the fastest cars weigh about 4 pounds. Those high speeds can do a lot of damage to these little cars. “Sometimes that happens, they blow up, ” Glenn says. “Some of these engines turn close to 50, 000 rpm on that straight away. I tip my hat off to the manufacturers…There is a lot of technology in these engines. They are actually built to aerospace tolerances because they turn that kind of RPM.” Glenn Williams explains how transponders in each RC car recorded lap times onto his computer. Jesus Ambrosio Recently, they registered the club with LAUSD and will be doing demos at schools this spring. They are currently working to bring the layout to next year's Long Beach Grand Prix.

How to become a Race Car engineer?

Start small and work your way up to a race car mechanic job. Jupiterimages/Comstock/Getty Images Race car mechanics have to stay cool under pressure. If a car breaks down in the middle of a race, the mechanic has to be able to jump in, figure out the problem and get the car back on the track as quickly as possible. Race car mechanics are also responsible for keeping these cars running smoothly in between races and for finding ways to help the car become a bigger contender during the race. Being a race car mechanic is often a well-paying job, as the yearly budget for a race car team - including mechanics, body technicians and engineers - can top $20 million. Certification Getting a job as a race car mechanic is a highly competitive endeavor, so you'll want as many points in your favor as possible. Although there's not one particular path to becoming a race car mechanic, getting an ASE certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is a good way to build your credentials. To pass the ASE exam, you should take a study course and take the practice tests on the ASE website for $14.95 each. You'll also need two years of work experience in the motor vehicle service industry to qualify, or three years for advanced-level certification. You can substitute two years of high school training or completing a mechanics education program for the work experience requirement. Vocational Training Completing vocational or tech school training is one path to becoming a race car mechanic. Schools such as WyoTech or the NASCAR Technical Institute offer race car training programs. The WyoTech program lasts nine months and students can opt to specialize in High Performance Powertrain in order to focus on race car mechanics work. NTI requires students to take not only a standard technician training, but also NASCAR-specific courses. Classwork and training lasts 48 to 78 weeks. After getting your degree from this type of training program, you have a better chance of getting a race car mechanic job, especially if someone from the program recommends you. Starting Small Vocational school isn't the right choice for everyone. Some people prefer to be trained on the job and build connections through networking. One mechanic who works with Felix Sabates at the race shops of Chip Ganassi Racing got his job by starting out building race cars at home. He worked at small, local tracks as a mechanic until he earned a reputation for his good work. After awhile, one of the many race drivers he met through his work recommended him to CGRFS. Online Resumes Another way to get a job as a race car mechanic is by completing your certification by attending a training program, or working at smaller tracks and then submitting your resume online to as many race car organizations as possible. This method, however, tends to be a tougher path than getting a recommendation from someone with whom you've worked or someone at a mechanics school. CGRFS receives hundreds of resumes and states that very few are picked through this method.

Gone are Phoenix, Dallas, Daytona, Washington, D.C. and the series' annual stop at a U.S. military base. Replacing those stops on the eight-city tour will be Memphis, Louisville, Thompson (Connecticut), Indianapolis and Canada. The GRC did not comment on which Canadian city will be hosting the series. Race venues and ticket information for 2017 have also yet to be released. The season ends with races at three returning cities - Atlantic City, Seattle and Los Angeles. “This should be a banner year for Red Bull GRC as we continue our ascent in the world of motorsport, ” said Red Bull GRC CEO, Colin Dyne. “We listened to the feedback from our fans, and the 2017 schedule reflects the demand to bring our unique brand of racing to new locations, as well as to return to a number of fan-favorite venues from previous seasons.” The 2016 Red Bull GRC season was the series’ most exciting yet, with the Supercar and GRC Lites Championships both coming down to the Los Angeles finale. The series will take its high-flying, wheel-to-wheel action to a number of new locations, including its first visit to Louisville and an inaugural trip to Canada. Popular events in Seattle and Atlantic City will return from 2016, while the series will also make its return to Tennessee and New England.

Be a safe driver. Driving safely is the first step to keeping insurance rates low. This means driving defensively, maintaining speeds within stated limits, never driving under the influence, and obeying all traffic laws. Below are a few other considerations to improve driving habits: Stay focused. Don’t text and drive, don’t be on the phone with friends. If your passengers are being rowdy, remind them that you are driving and need concentration. Be alert. Don’t ever drive while sleepy. Be sure to consider the impact of medications on your awareness and response time before driving. Consider other drivers. Always check your mirrors before turning or changing lanes. Be able to compensate for the actions and mistakes of drivers make. Compensate for weather conditions. It’s best not to travel when the weather is bad; however, if traveling in inclement weather, always slow down to a speed appropriate for the conditions and be prepared to take detours if necessary. Look for multi-line discounts. Most insurance providers offer discounts on overall premiums when you have multiple insurance policies through their agency. This can include life, homeowner's, renter’s, motorcycle, boat, and other forms of insurance. Ask about promotions. Some providers have a term bonus for safe driving. Some providers run specials on different levels of coverage and what is included. When contacting an insurance agent for a quote, always be sure to ask if they have any promotional programs that you can benefit from. Part 2 Considerations When you are a Younger Driver Age and gender can impact rates. Young males are assessed higher premiums than females of the same age; however, both genders, aged between 16-25, cause a significant increase in insurance premiums. For young males, insurance rates can increase rates by between 59-118%, depending on where you live. Although there are ways to reduce the amount you pay, individuals under the age of 25 will pay significantly more than adult drivers. Ask about “good student” discounts. Some insurers offer discounts for good grades, correlating high GPA with increased personal responsibility and decreased likelihood of risky behavior that could lead to a car accident. In order to qualify for good student discounts, the following conditions will have to be met: Be younger than 25 years of age. Be a full-time student at highschool, college, or university. Maintain at least a “B” (3.0) average GPA, and/or be on the Honor Roll or Dean’s List. Remain on a family policy. In many if not most cases, young drivers are added to their parent’s existing insurance policy. This becomes an “umbrella policy” and allows the teen to be listed as an “occasional driver” for a vehicle, keeping the rates lower than if the teen is listed as a primary. Make sure the title is in the name of the policyholder. In order to receive the benefit of an umbrella policy, you must surrender the title of the vehicle to the policyholder. Be careful. Any accidents that happen will raise the rates on the entire policy by at least 25%

This car, according to the seller, was one of five examples built to compete in the 1991 BTCC season. It was driven by British native Tim Harvey, and took the outright win in the series finale at Silverstone racing circuit. It ultimately finished eighth in the championship, and has since moved through a handful of private collections, before coming up for sale via Race Cars Direct last month. Race Cars Direct According to the seller, this E30 still has its original Labatt Brewing Company livery, and remains in ready-to-race condition. The cockpit looks exceptionally clean and purposeful, with an updated fire suppression system visible in the sales pictures. With an asking price of just 150, 000 British Pounds, or about $183, 000 by current exchange rates, this little 3er doesn't come cheap. But the motorsport heritage and impressive originality of this example will surely justify the price for someone.

The 2015 BMW i8 hybrid sports car is a wild exercise in road car technology, combining a carbon fiber passenger cell and aluminum frame construction with a gasoline-electric hybrid system that comprises a turbocharged three-cylinder engine in the back and an electric motor up front. Zero-to-60 mph comes in 4.2 seconds and the i8 is EPA rated to drive up to 15 miles on electric-only juice with a combined range of 330 miles. While it may be the ultimate toy for the environmentalist playboy, at some point reality sets in. You have to make a make a grocery run while your wife takes the kids to baseball practice in the Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid. Can the i8 do more than just make you look cool? Can it pinch-hit as a daily driver? Speed Bumps 2015 BMW i8; Cars.com photo by Joe Bruzek It looks like a speed bump would scrape off the i8's entire aerodynamic underbody paneling, but surprisingly, it doesn't. Without a front spoiler hanging down from the bumper like many hybrids and sports cars, there's not much for the i8 to scrape while approaching a speed bump. I encountered no fewer than six massive speed bumps on my commute home, and the i8 handled them with ease. Scissor Doors 2015 BMW i8; Scissor doors open upward like wings and are a defining characteristic of the i8. Made out of a carbon fiber frame and aluminum skin, they weigh about 50 percent less than a traditional door. The oohs and ahhs elicited from onlookers quickly turn to laughter as they watch your body contort into the car. There's no graceful way to do it, but I plopped my rear down on the wide carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic cell with legs facing outward and then slid into the seat while bringing my legs around. My wife and I spent a weekend in the car, and she said she could never wear a dress given the awkward ingress and egress. Tight parking spaces should be avoided at all costs for you (or your valet). It doesn't take much for the doors to get caught on a side mirror in their upward swing. Cargo Space Cars.com photo by Joe Bruzek With only 4.7 cubic feet of cargo space, there's room for one medium-sized piece of luggage in the cargo area under the i8's rear hatch. BMW was kind enough to integrate a cargo cover, which is laughable given hardly any cargo fits. I fit seven bags of groceries in the trunk with one bag of spillover to the rear shelf. Anything placed on the shelf will impact what little rear visibility exists. The cargo area is deep but has a tall load-in height and requires a good amount of effort to lug a suitcase out of the back or reach down to grab that last grocery bag. The trunk also gets really hot since the engine is in the back; it's a good idea to keep frozen items in the passenger compartment. My luggage and clothes inside were warm to the touch after a two-hour drive. Good news though: You might be able to bake a frozen pizza in the trunk. Road Comfort The i8 looks like it should be a ground-pounding exotic car with supercar handling and cavity-loosening ride quality. That couldn't be further from the truth. The i8's ride quality is docile in Comfort driving mode, and it's actually quite pleasant on longer drives. You don't have to be on white-knuckled pothole watch duty when driving through the city. After two hours in the car, however, I wanted lumbar adjustability in the seats for an aching back - the seats are only six-way powered - and also a lower seating position. Visibility isn't very good with thick A-pillar and only a sliver of glass in back plus those crazy doors with narrow windows. A huge variety of camera assists and parking sensors do a technologically masterful job of keeping the driver informed of the car's extremities while parking, however. Drive-Throughs Whether at the coffee drive-through or paying a toll, reaching through the window for anything is an absolute pain since it doesn't roll down all the way. When you need that extra little length because the car is so wide, opening the door just increases the distance and difficulty. Those damn doors! Fan Favorite The look-at-me factor is probably one of the biggest selling points of the i8. Be prepared to add an extra 10 or 20 minutes to each errand because people will stop you with questions: What it is? How fast is it? How much does it cost? Hordes of onlookers will flock every single time the doors flip up. Does the i8 Work As a Daily Driver? No. There are clearly a number of hindrances that prevent the i8 from being a comfortable daily driver. That's not surprising given it's a sports car and makes many of the same compromises any sports car does. What made it more confusing was the i8 didn't have a resounding high-performance or hybrid/electric driving experience to make me want to deal with those annoyances.
